Probabilistic AI does not mix well with deterministic payment systems.

This is my daily post. I write daily, but send my newsletter to your email only on Sundays. Go HERE to see my past newsletters.

The IMF just poured cold water on the payment industry’s plans for autonomous agentic payments and warns: let AI do the thinking, but not the paying.

The IMF isn’t trying to delay the future of agentic payments, but addresses the cold reality that we are asking systems that can hallucinate to do something that requires certainty.

The IMF draws a hard architectural line: probabilistic AI and deterministic payment rails are a dangerous mix.

This is the exact same distinction I drew in an article on AI replacing banking software a while back, commenting that you don’t ever want to ask an AI for your bank balance.(see below)

The shift that AI proponents would like to see accelerated is from ‘click-to-pay’ to ‘decide-to-pay.’ The idea is that agents autonomously interpret objectives, select payment rails, and execute transactions without a human in the loop.

The IMF’s response? Not so fast.
