I call this collection “disruption or demise” because unless a bank disrupts itself, its demise is inevitable. That’s how high the stakes are with the many digital technologies banks now need to manage.
Banks can choose to evolve with AI, CBDC, and stablecoins or cede ground to tech giants and neobanks and eventually go extinct. Some may even pursue becoming digital platforms and try to go the superapp route, inspired by Asia. I wish them luck!
Banks are slow innovators. I know this from 20 years of real-world experience as an international banker charged with innovation, which is why I dare call myself an expert.
I lived and suffered through bank resistance to innovate; it is a topic that is particularly near and dear to my heart. In fact, it was the genesis of my first book, “Innovation Lab Excellence.”
The problem remains many banks are crippled by a DNA that rewards stability and consistency in an era that demands swift adoption and exploitation of technology.
Some will disrupt themselves, others won’t, and AI inequality already separates winners from losers…….. (see the first article below)
