Generative AI in APAC: Developing Nations and Young are in the Lead!
APAC's developed nations are behind in AI adoption!

Deloitte surveyed 11,900 individuals across APAC and found that younger employees are driving AI adoption and are using AI with or without their boss’s knowledge!
What is amazing to me is the high adoption levels in the survey, with 81% of university students and 62% of employees using the technology.
But wait for it, the shocker is that 50% of employees using gen AI for work purposes do not believe management knows they are using it!
Enjoy your moment thinking about that before you think about data privacy!
👉TAKEAWAYS
1. Students and employees are leading the gen AI revolution across Asia Pacific, but only half believe their manager knows they are using it.
2. Developing economies are leading the charge with gen AI adoption, with take-up rates 30% higher than developed economies.
Why? Look at the chart below, which shows the responses by nation to key questions. Respondents in developing nations see genAI as a tool for a better life, while those in developed nations feel fatalism and don’t see it changing much.
3. Almost 1.1 billion work hours across Asia Pacific is expected to be impacted by gen AI
4. Using gen AI saves each user almost a day per week and frees up time to learn new skills
5. Gen AI increases the level of satisfaction at work and study
👊STRAIGHT TALK
The most stunning part of this survey can be seen in how respondents from advanced and developing nations responded to the question:
“Do you believe genAI will mean APAC will have a greater role in the global economy?”
The results were simply stunning: 78% of Chinese, 75% of Indians, 40% of Japanese, and 33% of Australians answered in the affirmative.
I have written for years about how Asian nations view digital technology as aspirational, and once again, Indian and Chinese respondents show this to be true.
What is equally shocking is that when asked if genAI significant influenced their career decision. India 84%, China 76%, Japan 46% and Australia 29%!
What is apparent to me is that the youth in affluent Australia and Japan do not see or care how AI can boost their nation’s stature or their own standing in society. I would call this fatalist to the extreme.
At least in the early stages of the AI race, it appears that AI will be a tool that will help emerging economies more than advanced within APAC.
That is quite surprising, do you feel it’s possible?
